Children Aboard the Titanic
Although not rare, there were very few kids on the Titanic. In total, there were about 100 children aboard the Titanic. But we also have to consider that fact that in the early 1900's, you were a kid until you were about 13. By the time you were 13 you could already be looking for your spouse and soon be having kids. The youngest person who got married on the Titanic was 14. The youngest mother aboard the Titanic was only 16. There was even a group of young boys only a year or two over the age 13 that were not allowed on the lifeboats because they were too old. They went down with the ship. Today this would be seen as unreasonable and cruel, but back then it sad, but normal. Over all, by today's standards, there were many more kids aboard the Titanic.
But before the tragedy hit the Titanic, what were the children to do to entertain themselves? Unlike today, they had no arcades to visit, not water slides to slide down, no iceskating rinks to skate in, no water parks to spend the day at, no rock walls to climb, and no sport simulators to use. Although all of these things are typical on most cruise ships today, they had not even been invented in the time of the Titanic. And what about the three classes? While the first class kids were being pampered beyond their wildest dreams, what were the third class kids left with? Did the second class get the good or bad side of being the middle class? What was there for the children to do while their parents lounged around and enjoyed themselves in this floating palace called the Titanic? Well, read on and you will find out!
