Recovering from the Crash
After the crash of the Titanic, the United States and Europe went silent. Friends and family of people lost in the collision were enraged and ready to know who caused the crash. For weeks, people lined up around newspaper stands and White Star's offices to hear the latest news of the Titanic. Like anyone, people around the world were curious to know who or what had caused the collision. Some people who had caught footage or taken phots of the building and launch of the Titanic even released movies/ documentaries/slide shows to the public movie theatres. Curious people packed into theatres to see the short films, wanting to re-live what they thought would never be seen above water again- the Titanic. People wanted to see the ship who's first launch had been its last. Although it was depressing, it was thrilling to see this "secret footage" of a ship that was destined for doom, yet would have never expected it. It was amazing to see the happy faces of the passengers as they boarded the Titanic, not knowing that more than two-thirds of them would never get off that ship again.
Hearings were held by the United States and English governments to investigate the collision and find out the who or why the Titanic crashed and sunk so quickly. At the time of the hearings, some people had made up their minds that some crew member had purposefully sunk the ocean liner. Because Captain Smith had gone down with the ship, some people even thought he had sunk the ship and then committed suicide to get away with it. But the U.S. and English governement were not interested in the rumors being spread around the world. No, they were more interested in how the crash could have happened, who sunk the Titanic, what safety regulations had failed, and creating new safety regulations for ships. They wanted to know the facts, and the facts only. So, we will explore their investigations conclusion on the next pages. Some of these conclusions are still being challenged today by new research skills and technology.
